Earlier this week Microsoft withdrew an update for Vista that was supposed to prepare computers for Service Pack 1, expected in two weeks. The update caused many complaints around the Web.

Users said it made their PCs reboot continuously, or that it became impossible to reboot at all. Then came out with a list of 12 applications that it says became unreliable after a Vista SP1 update. This is troubling, because some are security programs such as antivirus software. Newer versions are supposed to be available now.

However, some other third-party programs will not run after an update. users be warned. When SP1 becomes generally available, back up your data first, and proceed with caution.

There are illegal copies of around, that have been cracked so they can be activated. However Microsoft has started sending all Vista users an update that identifies the bogus copies. When it finds an illegal installation it will not disable it, according to Microsoft. Instead you see a notice alerting you to the situation.

Installing SP1 will fix two common hacks of the Vista o/s, and then constantly nag users of pirated copies to shell out the cash for a legitimate version.
