A Huge Security Update From Apple
Posted by Syd Tash under Updates
Apple has released a new version of its Safari browser for Macs and Windows computers. This new version fixes 13 vulnerabilities in the old version. Apple claims this new browser is almost twice as fast as Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox. The company also says Safari runs Javascript up to six times faster than other browsers. You can get Safari for free here: http://www.apple.com/safari
However, Apple need not be too proud of itself. It also issued a security update for the Leopard and Tiger operating systems, and Apple’s 802.11n base station for wireless networking. In all, there were over 100 patches. This is almost half of all the fixes the company released in the whole of last year. It must be said that many were for third-party applications bundled with OS X.
Apple does not rate the bugs it patches, unlike, say, Microsoft. But a goodly number of these fixes were described by Apple as potentially leading to “arbitrary code execution“. This is code for saying the flaw could allow a hacker to run software on your Mac, and effectively seize control of it. In plain English, they are critical.
Get the updates using your Mac update service. Or go here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ Depending on your version, the update will be a 50MB – 108MB download.
