I often mention the custom HOSTS file, and how it is an important part of your defenses.  So here is a bit more detail.

The HOSTS file keeps you away from known bad sites, helps prevent ads from being fed to you, blocks tracking cookies and spyware, and can even speed up your computer because your browser is not displaying ads.

The HOSTS file can also be used to keep your children away from dangerous or inappropriate sites.

For details on how the HOSTS file does all these marvelous things, and to get one free, click here:  http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Malware has gotten so sophisticated in the last few years that it can block updates to your anti-virus program via the HOSTS file.  So open your HOSTS file occasionally and use the Find function (CTRL-F) to make sure your anti-virus program is NOT listed there.  If it is, you have a virus;  just delete that line.
