Email & Phishing Scams
Posted by Syd Tash under Security
I have often warned in this space and in my ebook about phishing scams, ie fake emails designed to entice you to give private or sensitive information on sites that look like they come from your bank, broker, store, eBay, PayPal, etc. I get a big bunch every day myself!
Anytime you want to contact these sites, you must type in the address yourself, in your browser. Be sure the site begins with https://… and you see the little gold padlock, although this is not foolproof.
If you’re not sure if an email is authentic, contact the supposed sender directly, and ask them. Always check your bank and credit card statements carefully and promptly.
Take action on any suspicious transactions. Email is not secure, so avoid sending sensitive info in an email. Finally, never shop or give personal information from a public computer. Not ever. No matter what security precautions you think you have taken.
