Vista vs. Other Operating Systems
Posted by Syd Tash under News
Microsoft is hard at work showing us that Vista is safer and more secure than Windows XP or other open source operating systems (OS). In Vista’s first year just now ended, the new OS had significantly fewer security bugs and holes than XP and others had in their first years. According to Microsoft.
Security company Secunia seems to agree. It reported fewer vulnerabilities in Windows last year than in other open source OS. Read about Windows vs. Macs in my post right here. The latest analysis by Microsoft is based on flaws that were made public. It has been pointed out that security flaws are much more readily publicized in open source systems such as Linux than in proprietary systems such as Windows.
In any event, Microsoft published 17 security updates for Vista in its first year, compared to 30 for XP’s first year. These bulletins patched 36 bugs in Vista, compared to 65 in XP. The various versions of Linux had up to 360 vulnerabilities in their first years, while Mac OS X had 116.
There you go. Which OS you use is up to you, and depends on many things, not the least of which is of course security.
