Mozilla is getting ready to release Firefox 3, perhaps as early as mid-June. It is asking users to pledge to download it on the day it is released, so it can set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in a single day.

The company is also trying to drum up excitement, asking users to host parties to get friends to download the new browser, put “Download Day” buttons on their Web sites, etc.

There is no current record for most software downloads, so whatever number comes up with will be the new record. According to the company, more than 175 million people use . It is available in 45 languages and 230 countries. You can join the fun and excitement here: http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/

Some 150,000 people have already pledged.

Microsoft has given a first glimpse of Windows 7, the planned successor to the operating system. The new o/s will have touch screen technology. It will enable you to move photos or open, move and resize windows by putting your hands on the screen. The mouse and keyboard will still be available.

Other improvements include digital ink (whatever that is), speech and parallel computing, as well as performance improvements. Look for Windows 7 in late 2009.

It will replace the less-than-popular Vista. has sold about 150 million copies of Vista. But many of those were pre-installed on new computers, giving purchasers little choice.
