Facebook, MySpace, Skype and Digital Picture Frames

A critical flaw in two ActiveX controls used by Facebook and MySpace could allow attackers to crash Internet Explorer (IE). Even worse, the hacker could seize control of your computer (the dreaded remote code execution).
Additional malware could be downloaded to your PC, permitting the hacker to steal your confidential information. The ActiveX controls are available to users of these two social networking sites in order to upload images to their pages using IE. Firefox should not be vulnerable to this flaw, as it is not part of Windows and does not use Activex controls.
In order for the attack to work, you would have to be enticed or tricked into visiting a malicious Web site, which would then feed you the corrupted ActiveX controls. By the time you read this, the problem should have been fixed. Even so, let us all take the lesson and be prudent on the Web, and keep our defenses up.
Yet another flaw has been found in the Skype VOIP system by noted researcher Aviv Raff. This time it is in the SkypeFind feature, which lets users recommend businesses to other users. The bug could allow an attacker to place his malicious code into the user’s system. The researcher recommends that most users disable SkypeFind until a permanent fix is found.
The store chain Best Buy has revealed that it has been selling 10.4 inch digital picture frames containing a virus. The brand name is Insignia. When you connect the frame to your computer, your machine will get infected. The good news is, the virus is well-known, and your antivirus program should be able to handle it.
The frames are not being recalled. If you have one, call Insignia at 1-877-467-4289 or visit their Web site here.
