Vista Service Pack 2 is now in general release. It is supposedly the final service pack for the much-criticized operating system. You can get it from the Microsoft Download Center, or wait for Automatic Updates to send it to you.

That could take a couple of months, according to Microsoft, since delivery of SP2 is a “throttled” or staged release. You must have SP1 installed in order to get SP2.

If you have the beta version of the service pack, which was released some six months ago, you will have to remove it before installing the new, final version. As expected, has all the updates released since Service Pack 1. It also has several other improvements, as well as support for Bluetooth 2.1.

Note: In case you miss it, at the beginning of the install, warns you that your PC will reboot after the install process is done. So if you are downloading and installing in the background while working on something else, don’t. Or you could lose all your work.

Finally, Microsoft’s record with these service packs over the last few years has been poor. It might be wise to wait a while before installing SP2, to see if any problems are reported.
